Wereys report - October 2016

Vets report October 2016

Our 2016 campaign as National O45 Plate champions started in September with the usual West Vets O40’s Festival in Taunton. Once again we had a really small squad but we played some great hockey to beat Devon and Cornwall and Dorset in our first two matches. Chris Chan was outstanding in goal and saved us on many occasions. Our last match was against a very strong Gloucestershire side who managed to wear us down and we lost 2-1 to finish joint top of the table with them but second on goal difference. A very valiant performance so well done to the squad.
Our next outing was the Avon O40 Vets Tournament held on 16th October at Clifton College. Fortunately we had a bigger squad with a few younger legs and, once again, played our usual flowing hockey. We beat Team Turnbull and Elderberries 1-0 in the opening two games. Winscombe followed who we defeated 2-0 although it should have been more and in our last game against OB’s we managed to find the goal three times although we conceded a goal due to some sloppy passing by yours truly. So the first trophy of the season has been retained – well done again to the squad.
We have a busy few weeks next month with our first round of the EH Cup on 20th November v Dart Vets away and a practice match v Team Turnbull on Wednesday 9th November.
Our season this side of Christmas finishes with our annual match v Redland for the Chris Bradley Trophy – date TBC.
