Wereys report – January 2018

The first half of the 2017/2018 season has gone really well with four tournaments/matches played and no losses.

West Over 40s

A small squad played in the West O40 tournament in Taunton in September, where we had a win and a draw, but finished overall winners because of other results. Well done to the squad.

Avon Over 40s

Our next outing was the Avon O40 tournament in October at Clifton College. We had almost a full squad with some young legs to do all running around. We remained unbeaten throughout the day so were once again crowned Avon Vets champions.

England Hockey Over 45s Cup

The first round of the EH O45 Cup was our next match on 26th November where we were drawn at home against Oxford Hawks. The match was played at Badminton School and a hardy group of spectators was treated to a stunning display of hockey. We had our usual slow start and were only 1-0 up at half time, so after a talking to at half time the team came out firing and had a dominating second half, scoring another three goals to finish 4-1 winners.

Our next match is the quarter final against Taunton on 11th February at 11am at Clifton College.

The Chris Bradley Trophy

We finished the first half of the season on 9th December with our annual Chris Bradley Trophy match against Redland. The game was disrupted by a frosty UWE pitch and we had to move the game to the afternoon to Abbeywood School, which meant we lost a lot of our squad. We played the game with 11 players and no subs but put up a great performance against the youngsters. We scored first but were unable to hold on to the lead so the game finished 1-1 and the trophy shared.

We’ll be having a practice match on 28th January against Redland to get back up to speed after the Christmas and New Year break for our EH Cup match on 11th February.
